Can I ask a quick question please because I am a little confused. I am newly diagnosed and on the latest letter from the rheumatologist it states I have a rheumatoid factor but then it says anti-CCP negative? So what does that mean? Do I have RA or not? Thank you.

I was rheumatoid factor negative but have been told I have seronegative rheumatoid arthritis. I'm not sure about the other test. I hope I haven't confused you even more. I'm sure someone else will step in and explain these results. best wishes from Naomi.

Hi Kim, These are the main blood tests used to determine if you have RA or not. I understand that some people may test positive for one or both of these tests. In my case several RF Factor tests always proved negative, so a diagnosis of Seronegative Inflammatory Polyarthritis (the polyarthritis means more than one joint), was given. A private consultant that I went to for a second opinion suggested the ANTI CCP test, which I'm not sure if my GP had heard of and my hospital consultant had never mentioned. I asked my GP for the test and it proved to be 'strongly positive', confirming that I had RA. Best wishes Eleanor

Thank you both for your replies. I think I understand a little better now.

Thank you Jean! I gave them a call and spoke to a lovely lovely lady (thank you Lorraine you were so kind) and she talked me through everything and gave me some advice too. What a great organisation they are. So pleased to have found such friendly caring people. Kim x

So glad you rang them and no doubt you are feeling more relaxed about it all. The sero positive and negative are one aspect of this disease I've never quite got my head round!! Take care xx

Hi Kim I started off sero-negative but at some point became sero-positive! Anti-CCP wasn't around when I was diagnosed so have only recently had the test. So pleased you have had a chat with Lorraine and got some advice. She is a lovely lady and very knowledgeable too The various tests can be quite confusing and it isn't as simple as it might appear, as I'm sure you now know! Some people can be RF positive but never develop RA, and that's just for starters!! Take care Kim, Lyn x

Thank you Lyn Yes I thought it was more 'cut and dried' but of course, it isn't. Have a good weekend! Kim x

Hi My Rhuematoid factor is positive but anti-ccp was negative and was diagnosed as have rhuematoid athritis. I think they base a lot on your symptoms when they give a diagnosis and not just blood tests. Big hugs Amy xx
